Urgent referrals

I welcome phone calls about patients with urgent problems as direct contact between us can optimize the patient’s investigation and management.

The following conditions may need urgent attention:

  • Acute otitis externa or otitis media
  • Sudden deafness
  • Sudden, severe vertigo
  • Acute sinusitis
  • Mild epistaxis
  • Acute tonsillitis or suspected quinsy
  • Ear or nose foreign bodies
  • Suspected malignancy of the head and neck
  • Facial nerve palsy

The following conditions are best managed directly in your nearest Emergency Department:

  • Severe epistaxis
  • Airway compromise or breathing difficulty
  • Acute mastoiditis
  • Periorbital cellulitis
  • Post-tonsillectomy bleeding
